  • My grandmother was Maria Elizabeth Strydom. She married my grandfather, John Henry Randall, in the Methodist Church at Heilbron, Orange Free State, on 3 December 1894. On her marriage record her place of origin was Heilbron (Klipfontein).
John Henry and Maria Elizabeth share-farmed on 'Gunstvlakte', Vechtkop ward, near Heilbron. By 1906 they were on the farm 'Middenin', Frankfort. They moved to Kenya temporarily in 1912, returned to Frankfort in 1916 and settled permanently in Kenya 1918. They had 10 children between 1895 and 1918. Both died in Kenya, Maria Elizabeth on 2 February 1949 "aged 79 yrs", according to her death certificate, therefore born in 1870 or thereabouts. I have been unable to confirm who her parents were, her birth date or where she was born. Can anyone help? ... Peter Randall

  • I have been researching the Langenhoven side of family for quite sometime but did not gather much information on them. My dad Lesley Lehane Langenhoven born on 13 August 1926 in Cape Town. His brother was Henry William Langenhoven and his sister was Rossie Langenhoven (unfortunately I do not know what her full name was) (married Porter-Smith). They lived at No. 25 Liscard Street, Kenwyn. My dad died on 09 August 1979 in Walvis Bay. According to sources his dad was Johannes Cornelius Langenhoven (or Johannes Jacobus) and his mother was Elizabeth Anita Langenhoven (or Anita Elizabeth) (she was a Vorster before she married a van Heerden after which she married my granddad) born 1900. My granddad was apparently much older than my grandmom. My brother can also recall that my dad mentioned something about growing up in Vasco in Cape Town before moving to Kenwyn. My dad married Annie Kathleen Grace Rodkin and his brother Henry married Lorraine Rodkin (younger sister of my mom).
Some also remember that my granddad has some or other business (they can't remember what). My brother also recalls that he had a business but also said that at some stage he lost it.
If anyone out there have any information for me, please forward it to me. Your kind assistance and co-operation in this regard will be highly appreciated. ... Avril Roberts (nee Langenhoven)

  • I have hit a brick wall with my great great grandfather, Edmund Daniel HAMER.
He married Annie (aka Ruth) KEEN and their first child, Edmund Charles HAMER was born in PE in 1889. Their second child was born in Buckinghamshire, UK in 1891. According to his (Ernest George HAMER) birth certificate, his father was a letter carrier. Annie, Edmund Charles and Ernest George were staying in the home of her parents in Buckinghamshire at the time of the 1891 England census. No sign of Edmund Daniel HAMER, but Annie is not described as a widow.
I have photos of Annie with her two sons aged about 3 and one taken in PE, so they must have returned fairly soon after the 1891 census was done. I have a few photos of this trio taken in PE and later in Ficksburg but the photos never included Edmund Daniel HAMER.
Annie (aka Ruth) was born in Buckinghamshire, but I do not know whether Edmund Daniel HAMER was born in SA or perhaps somewhere in the UK.
Annie's third child was William ARTHUR, born in about 1902 in Johannesburg, by which time she had married (I presume) WIlliam ARTHUR snr. I do not know whether Edmund Daniel HAMER had died by then, or whether they were divorced.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. ... Janine Lee

  • My grandfather was Peter Stoker, his mother was Dorothea Rose Eastwood. Dorothea's parents and paternal grandparents came by ship from England to South Africa sometime around 1894. Dorothea's dad worked at MacFarlane's Farm around 1895 with horses for Cecil John Rhodes Kenilworth Estate. He was married before he left England and they had a few children some siblings being: Barbara, Joyce and John. Both Dorothea's parents died young and in South Africa (as far as I know) and her and her sisters were raised by aunts and they spent time at Worcester Orphanage. Dorothea and her siblings were part of the first ox-wagon pioneers to Rhodesia. Her brother John Eastwood married someone named Norma and they lived in Hartley, Rhodesia. Dorothea was born 18/2/1899 in Kimberley, South Africa. I believe there is a link between the Eastwood and Whitton family and Lancaster, UK. I have found a record on Zimbabwe government papers mentioning the land of John Norman Eastwood the land being in Hartley which adds up correctly and he seemed to have a son John Whitton Eastwood who lived in Hartley - if anyone can help me with Eastwoods going to SA or they know any Eastwoods in Zimbabwe please help. ... • Am trying to find information about (1) Charles Albert Trott b 1876 Lambeth London and his wife Jane Hayhurst b 8 Jan 1868 who married 1 May 1897 at the CHurch of tte Sacred Heart, Lambeth. emigrated to SA around 1900.
And (2) Charles' brother Robert James Trott b 1864 Paddington London married Jane's sister Mary b 16 July 1857 Holborn London in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Lambeth on 19 Dec 1896.
I think they emigrated to SA together in around 1900, although I can find no exact matching records in the passenger lists from UK to South Africa. I also suspect Robert James Trott came to SA earlier and may have gone back to the UK in/around 1896 to marry and induce his brother to join him.
However, I can find little evidence of them in SA other than a mention of a business the brothers had in Pietermaritzburg about 1904/5; a dissolution of a partnership in 1905; some dealing with cattle from the SS Epsom in 1909 and some documents referring to Robert and Mary in 1911/1912/1913. At this same time I find Charles Albert and Jane Trott in Queensland, Australia with their children.
Can anyone give me any advice about where to look for information, about possible children of Robert and Mary and/or deaths? Thanks ... Isabel Cosgrove Hatcher rosneath@ntlworld.com

  • Have you any information on my great grandfather, John William Collins, born circa 1843, family legend has it in Cork, Ireland, who in April 1862 married Dorothea Yda Maria Adriaanse, in Cape Town. He was a farrier, who moved to Kimberley in the days of the diamond rush, and subsequently moved to the Gold Fields, and then with the other Uitlanders moved to Cape Town in the Boer War years. He stayed in Papendorp and Woodstock. One of his sons was my granfather, Henry John Collins, born in 1879, died 1952, who married Justina Eliza Adriaanzen, his cousin. She died in 1936 of sugar diabetes in Cape Town. In the 1940s, I remember being taken to visit my father's uncle, who was on the mines in Johannesburg, but have no idea of his name or the suburb he resided in. He had a daughter nicknamed "Angel" who was a good netball and ladies basket ball player, and I think also had sons. I would love any of her relatives to contact me. I am a member of the South African Geneaogical Society but so far have hit a blank wall with my great grandfather, his forebears, and other descendants of his.

  • I have been searching for anything about my great grandmothers who have been the mystery figures in my family tree. My first brick wall is anything about my great grandmother, Hermina Elizabeth BERRY. I was sent some information about her, which, if I can only find out any links to the rest of my family would give me a huge amount of information. Basically the information I have is that a Hermina Elizabeth BERRY, born 21 June 1839 in Port Elizabeth, was the daughter of Hermanus Johannes BERRY, born 6 December 1807 and Mary Ann SLATER, baptised 12 May 1811 in Cape Town. Hermina's grandparents are given as John James BERRY and Clara Hermina BOTHA. I would like to know if anyone knows who Hermina Elizabeth married. My great grandfather was George SMITH of King William's Town and his wife's name was Hermina Elizabeth BERRY - but were there two women with the same name? My grandfather, Edward George SMITH gave the name BERRY as the second name to all 7 of his children and my father and his oldest brother carried on the tradition. I would be most grateful for any help in finding out more about Hermina Elizabeth BERRY and her family. Thanks ... Jenny Kenyon.

  • Viljoen, Elizabeth Cornelia, my great grandmother married Ernest Clifford Dicks. After his death she married a William Devine. I haven't been able to find out much more about her as she doesne't seem to be on the Viljoen website. She and her husband lived in Alice. They were baptists and I have a record of some of the children being baptised in the Baptist Church in Alice. Ernest died in Grahamstown and Elizabeth died in East London in about 1934. Any breakthrough would be wonderful! ... Jenny.
My thanks go to Rene Berry who sent me information which could possibly be about my great grandmother, Hermina Elizabeth Berry. I am trying to find out who she married as that would indicate that she was the person I am looking for.
Ellen Stanton has very kindly sent me a copy of the marriage entry of George Smith and Hermina Berry and I'm hoping to prove that the Hermina who married my great grandfather is the same person as the Hermina cited above.
If there is anyone out there who can point me in the right direction or give me any additional information I would be most grateful. My email address is keithjen@iafrica.com. Regards. ... Jenny Kenyon.

  • I am trying to trace George Thomas Augustus Farrell who married Elizabeth Kay, (1847-1883) in Keiskammahoek, Eastern Cape, on the 25th February, 1870. He was listed as a store man. They lived in Alice but Elizabeth died in 1883 and I can find no trace of George after that.
Elizabeth had a twin sister, Agnes Kay who married Michael Kelly, a shoemaker in Fort Beaufort and Kingwilliamstown and after Elizabeth's death, Agnes looked after the 3 minor children although she had 6 children of her own as well as her minor brother. I would also like dates for the birth and death of Michael Kelly. Is anyone else researching these families? Regards Mel.

  • I can't seem to find any information on my paternal grandmother. Please help! The only details I have include:
She was Hester Johanna Elizabeth Simpson (maiden name: Bergh), born either late 1800's or early 1900's at Kakamas, Northern Cape. She married James John Simpson, born 20 November 1870 and moved to the farm Capricorn in the former South West Africa, close to Otchiwarogo. She later left and returned to South Africa. I'm not sure if they ever divorced. My grandfather remained on the farm and was buried in Otchiwarongo.
Her parents were Willem Johannes Andries Bergh, born 27 February 1862, and Hester Johanna Elizabeth, born Visser, on 19 May 1871. I found one record in the National Archives indicating that she was classified as a lunatic and hospitalized at the Oranje Hospitaal at Bloemfontein early in 1963. Regards. ... BettySimpson-Kriel
