This model of the S.S. Waratah was recently commissioned by Turners Shipping, Durban, whose founder David Turner was lost with the vessel. His family were also on board - Mrs Turner and their five children aged between 14 and 3; their destination was London. The Turners were among the approximately 40 passengers who embarked at Durban. Including the passengers from Australia and the Waratah's crew, there were 211 souls on board. The ship sailed from Durban at 8 p.m. on Monday 26 July 1909 - a hundred years ago.
The model stands in the boardroom of Turners Shipping and is just over a metre in length.
