WYNBERG SCHOOL

Wynberg, 2nd February 1846

Sir, As you have noticed the intended opening of the new School Room of the Dutch Reformed Church at Wynberg, on the 1st instant, I trust that a description of the proceedings on that day, solemn and satisfactory as they were, may not be refused a place in your valuable and truly philanthropic paper.

At an early hour on Sunday morning the Dutch Reformed Church Building at Wynberg was crowded; at 10 o’ clock the worthy minister, P.E.FAURE, ascended to the puplpit, and delivered a most excellent and impressive sermon from Matthew xxviii v 29 “Teach all nations”, which words are inscribed in front of the School Room. At the end of this sermon the 151st Hymn, 5th and 6th verses, were sung, upon which the minister descended from the pulpit, invited the congregation to the New School Room, addressed the elders, and placed into the hands of the elder, D.G. EKSTEEN, the Holy Scriptures, as the Book of God, which will be the foundation of the Instruction that will be there given, and into the hand of the elder, J.A. LOUW, the Catechism of the Reformed Church and the Psalms and Hymn Book, in order, with them, to precede the congregation in procession to the place which was about to be consecrated to Almighty God, for the most holy of purposes. The Minister and the Revd Mr. ELLIOTT followed the elders with the remaining Churchwardens, the public officers, and the congregation, in the most solemn procession imaginable, and anything more impressive I do not recollect ever to have witnessed than to behold a multitude of about 600 standing crowded together and joining in an impressive and solemn prayer, in which the minister beseeched the blessing on that building and the work to which it was intended to be devoted, thanking God heartily for the difference in the state of things on that day, compared to what it was a few years ago, when no house of prayer existed at this place, and when the Sabbaths were spent in a quite different manner, and for quite different purposes. This prayer was followed up by the united voice of all present, praising God with the words of the 100 Ps, 1, 3 and 4 verses, which were sung most impressively, whereupon the minister with stretched arms implored God’s blessing. Thus ended the proceedings of this solemn morning, and it was indeed most pleasing to observe how heartily the many present approached the minister with congratulations on the finished work, and on his birthday, which the 1st February happened to be.

Scarcely had the congregation left the consecrated School Room, or the Members of the Consistory aided by the other brethren were observed busily employing themselves in preparing seats to the number of 220 for the afternoon service, which was to be held according to the announcement in the School Room at half past four – the building was again crowded, for not only were all the seats, but every inch of the School Room, even the steps in front occupied. The Revd Mr ELLIOTT delivered a most appropriate and impressive address in the English language from Ps 119 v 130 – an address which I trust will have the effect of securing to us the support of our English brethren.

At 7 o’clock in the evening the Rev Mr. MORGAN preached to a crowded congregation in the Dutch language in the School Room, which was well lighted – from John 10 v 16 – encouraging everyone to cooperate with our Saviour in bringing many to that one flock, under one shepherd. Surely this day will long be remembered – may the Lord grant a rich harvest on this beginning. The collections on the above occasions amounted to £23.

I am, Sir, your obedient servant

O.P.Q.

DISTRESS ON THE FRONTIER

Already many cases of severe suffering, from loss of property, require attention in Graham’s Town, and a Society has been formed there to raise and apply funds for the relief of destitution. Food and clothing are wanted by many who, a few weeks ago, were in comfortable, even affluent circumstances, having fled from their homes, now consumed by fire, with no more than the clothes on their persons.

It is therefore suggested to the merchants here, who have large dealings with the Frontier, to form a Society to correspond with that in Graham’s Town, and to raise such supplies of money, flannel, clothing and other necessaries, as can be put in readiness and conveyed, with the least delay, to the scene of suffering. Winter is at hand, many delicate women, sick persons and young children may be at the moment cold, or without a change of clothing. Clothes, ready-made, of all sorts, will be most acceptable, as all hands are full of work of a different sort, nor could time probably be spared to work up the raw materials.

DEATH OF MR. J. D. NORDEN.

From all the information since gathered from eye-witnesses, the following appears to be a connected account of the affair:

The mounted force proceeded along the line of road fro Woest’s Hill, called sometimes Martin West’s farm, to the adjoining farm of Brak River, the dwellings upon which had been fired by the Kaffirs, and were then smouldering, when they ascended the hill by the road leading towards the coast. Before doing so however a party of the force, consisting of the men belonging to the Sporting Club were detached to the left for the purposes of examining the bushy ravines, which unite at the point called Paarnen Kraal.  Before reaching the top of the hill, Mr. FINNAUGHTY, who was acting, in conjunction with Mr. H. FULLER, as Guides to the Yeomanry, requested that Mr. NORDEN, the Commandant, would allow him four or five men for the purpose of looking into the ravines on the opposite side of the ridge, separating tue [sic] Kareiga Kloofs from those which extend up from the Kowie, in hopes of discovering three horses of his which he though might have strayed in that direction.  This request was granted, with instructions that they should not On any account proceed beyond the sound of recall or be long absent.  Mr. FINNAUGHTY consequently rode forward, and saw at the foot of the slope leading to the farm Beggelly a horse, but not one of his own.  Suspicious from the position in which the animal stood, by the side of a tangled ticket, that it might have been placed there as a decoy, he declined to descend the hill, and on returning perceived as he came in sight of a large ravine, called the Buffaloo Kloof, several Kaffirs running along the bush in a crouching posture, and taking shelter among a cluster of round projecting rocks, interspersed with aloes, and which stretched along the side of the kloof near which the yeomanry in two parties then were.  FINNAUGHTY instantly drew up his horse, and fired both barrels of his gun to attract the attention of the yeomanry, and then waved his hat to point out the position in which the enemy were.  Mr. NORDEN immediately ordered his men to advance, and by an impulse of gallantry moved forward to where the Kaffirs lay in ambush, accompanied by six of his men.  During these movements he had fired both barrels of his gun, had reloaded, and ordering his men to dismount, had approached to within a dozen paces of the rocks mentioned. When a ball from a Kaffir, crouched behind one of them, and upon which his gun rested, pierced his head, and he fell without uttering a sound.  This Kaffir, it is said, paid dearly for his temerity, being instantly shot by Mr. TAYLOR, the surgeon of the corps, and who was in turn fired upon by twelve or fourteen of the enemy’s sharpshooters, fortunately without effect.  A ball, however, struck his charger in the neck, a fine animal, and which became to restive that he was obliged to abandon him, fleeing on foot for the distance of 200 years, pursued by two or three of the savages, but who, seeing a few of the yeomanry advancing to cover his retreat, gave up the pursuit, and he escaped with the loss of his horse and its accoutrements, among them being a pair of valuable six-barrelled revolving pistols.  One young man of the Corps lost his horse, saddle and bridle; another lost his gun and saddle; and a third, his horse, which was knocked up and was abandoned, the Kaffirs being seen to emerge from the bush, and coolly walk off with him.  It is said that there were seen in these thickets not less than 400 Kaffirs, but still by cool determination there is the best reason to believe that the body of the Field Commandant might have been recovered.  It is said that immediately he fell, the savages seized upon it and dragged it towards the bush, and from the appearance it presented as seen by Mr. H. FULLER from a distance, it must have been instantly stripped of the outside clothing.  Mr. NORDEN carried with him a valuable double-barrelled gun and pistols, and he had in his pouch 60 rounds of ammunition, all which fell, almost without a struggle, into the hands of the enemy.  Several Kaffirs were, it is said, shot, but little dependence, we think, can be placed in such assurances, as the fall of their leader seems to have struck nearly the whole party with panic.  Some instances of individual bravery are recorded, but upon the whole the affair terminated so deplorably as to carry conviction to the mind of every one, that young men unaccustomed to danger, and who have not learned the difficult part of a soldier’s education – to obey orders – are, however ardent, but ill-qualified to sustain a position of danger, or to exercise that calm determination of purpose in the hour of peril, which are the best personal safeguards, as well as the most effectual conductors to ultimate victory.

It is due to the memory of the deceased to say that in him the public have at this moment sustained a great loss.  As a citizen, Mr. NORDEN was among the most public spirited of men – ready to give his best support to every public Institution.  With great activity and extraordinary powers of endurance, he was possessed of much intelligence, - of great quickness of apprehension, - of warm and generous feeling, and of undaunted courage.  No man that we have seen laid himself out more fully to aid in the defence of the country, both in this and in the former Kaffir war; no one was more willing to engage in arduous and perilous enterprises.  He has fallen in the defence of this country of his adoption, - he fell as a brave man and a  patriot, and as such his name will be embalmed in the grateful memory of his compatriots, as well as stand recorded in the annals of this country.

A party of eight of the inhabitants of Bathurst came in to-day from that village, and reported that with great difficulty they had, by taking a circuitous route, succeeded in reaching town.  A body of the enemy lined the drift at Blue Krans, the approach to which down the descent is very bushy.  But keeping their horses in hand until they came to this point, they then dashed forward and got through without harm, the Kaffirs firing a volley after them, as they ascended the opposite hill, and which, drawing up their horses, they returned.  They state that nearly the whole of Lower Albany has been laid waste, the houses and stacks fired, and the cattle swept into Kaffirland…. About 1000 head of cattle have been taken from the Fish River Flats.  The Congo Kaffirs had joined the war party, and Pato was passing his men over the mouth of the Fish River by means of J. PHILIPS’ boat, and which it seems had been seized for the purpose of thus aiding in the invasion of the Colony…. The following letter from the Rev. J. AYLIFF, Wesleyan Minister at Bathurst, shows the deeply painful situation in which the inhabitants were at the time it was written:-

Bathurst, Tuesday Morning

We are all driven to the church, where to the present we are safe.  I bear arms and take my share of night duty.  Yesterday a party came in from CAWOOD’s, saying that all the Fish River cattle had gone; that the Kaffirs had secured the boat of J. PHILLIPS, with which they were crossing the river near the mouth.  James, my youngest son, went yesterday morning, 8 a.m. (without my permission) to water the horses at the fountain by the Drostdy, when two Kaffirs sprang upon him, and seized his arm, saying, “Give your horses!”  Yes I will, said James (in Kaffir) if you don’t kill me, and began crying.  The Kaffir replied, hold your noise, I won’t kill you.  At this moment the hoses broke away, and they left him and went after them.  I have much to say, but time does not allow me to add any more than to say that the officer in command, Mr. TUNNARD, is exceedingly kind and attentive to our concerns, and so are the small party of the 27th, which he commands.

A specimen of inimical feeling was manifested at the Funeral by a Provost serving a Writ in the Church-yard, upon the Nephew of the deceased. An occurrence that is believed to be unprecedented on solemn occsions in a Christian Country, and hostile to the Peace and Love that ought to abound in a Protestant Community.

Graham’s Town is already crowded with suffering people, driven in from the country. A Board of Relief has been appointed by the Governor, as will be seen by a notice in another page. It is proposed to form a Committee here, to act and correspond with that Board. This was suggested in the Advertiser of last week, but it was thought best to await for intelligence from Graham’s Town before formally appealing to the Public. Some of the requisite intelligence has now been received, and a Depot has been opened at Miss CUMMING’s, St.George’s-Street, to which the kind-hearted and liberal may send clothes of all descriptions to be immediately forwarded to the scene of suffering. No words are required to press this call upon the Public of Cape Town and its neighbourhood.

Already 26 flannel petticoats, of different sizes, and 2 small flannel gowns, made up by the young ladies of Mr HARRIS’ Boarding School at Herschell, have been received. Other ladies, it is known, have been busy, and are only waiting to know where to send their donations.

The death of this excellent man at this particular juncture is a public misfortune: possessing as he did all those qualities – unshaken intrepidity, great address and thorough knowledge of the natives – to have been of great service to the colony at this crisis. He had made a journey to Clarkebury, with the view of affording assistance to the traders and missionaries who had fled to that station, and was on his way with them to his own station, when he was suddenly seized, within a short distance of reaching home, as supposed with Apoplexy, fell on the neck of his horse, and shortly expired, without uttering a word. As a useful missionary, Mr. PALMER has no superior; as a man and a Christian his name will ever be cherished among those worthies who have devoted their lives to benefit and bless their fellow men.

Graham’s Town, 23rd October 1846

Lieutenant-Colonel VAN DER MEULEN and Officers 73rd Regt take the opportunity of meeting Captain BROWN of the barque Catherine to express to him their high sense of his generous endeavours to afford assistance to HM Troop Ship Apollo (having 73rd Regt on board) when in great danger of going on shore on the reefs at the Great Fish River Mouth, at th place called Waterloo Bay, on the 30th August last.

They feel grateful to Captain BROWN for having voluntarily left his ship at that time to give his opinion, founded on experience, as to the danger attending a longer stay on the part of the Apollo, and to tender his assistance to carry a hawser to a neighbouring vessel.

WATERING THE STREETS

For about six months in the year the dust in the Heeregracht, Keizersgracht, and some neighbouring streets, is not only an annoyance, but really injurious to goods in open shops and stores. For some fifty or sixty pounds this annoyance could be kept under, or wholly removed, by sprinkling these streets with water from the common watering carts. To the Householders of Keizersgracht, Heerengracht, Shortmarket-street and St.George’s-street, this would be a mere trifle, probably not more than a half-penny a day, for six months. They might be invited to meet and consider this by their Wardmasters.

THE NAUTILUS

Cape Town, 29th October 1846

Captain J.P. ELLIS, brig ‘Nautilus

Dear Sir, We regret to observe in the Zuid Afrikaan of this date a repetition of the complaints relative to the treatment of the Burghers on board our vessel during the late voyage from Algoa Bay, and we feel ourselves called upon in justice to you to state, that having had many opportunities of observing the provisions served out and the accommodations set apart to the Burghers, in our opinion, having had some experience in these affairs, no just ground of complaint exists.

That these persons, many of them members of respectable and even wealthy families, should have found themselves exceedingly uncomfortable, when on board a vessel for the first time in their lives, and suffering much in bad weather, from sea-sickness, is not to be wondered at, but we again assert that in our opinion there is no ground for just complaint. On the contrary, we have pleasure in bearing our testimony to your unremitted attention, not only to the duties of the vessel, but to the comfort of all on board, as afar as you had in your power.

We remain, dear Sir, your obedient servants

Henry HEWITT

FRONTIER

(Graham’s Town Journal)

Received information from the N.E. Boundary, dated 21st instant, from which it appears that a dispatch had just reached the Colony for the Governor from the Diplomatic Agent, W. FYNN, now in the Amaponda country, and it appears that two out of three messengers entrusted there with were destroyed on the way.  The letter before us states –

The express for His Excellency from Mr. FYNN, was brought to the Kei, below Stoffel VENTER’s, by two men that have in my opinion been murdered.  Three men were coming with the letters, one of whom providentially escaped, although fired at several times.  He had to conceal himself in the water from 12 o’clock until sun-set, keeping only his head out of the water.  These men are supposed to have been destroyed by the colonial levies, and not by the Kaffirs.

This day the Rifle Brigade, consisting of 281 rank and file, and the following officers, reached Graham’s Town:- Capts. A.H. HORSFORD,  A.S. MURRAY, and GIDSON; Lieuts. J. AECKWITH, CARTWRIGHT, V.O. OXENDEN, and F.D. HOWELL.  This Corps is to march to-morrow for Colonel SOMERSET’s division, and to which it is to be attached.  It appears to be peculiarly well adapted for the service of this frontier.  The dress is very similar to that of the C.M. Rifles, and their other appointments just suited to this country, and to the duty they will be required to do on this border.

Tuesday – Received information of a hair-breadth escape from death by Mr. PENNY, jun., of Salem.  It appears that yesterday he was out a few miles from his place of residence in search of some missing oxen.  He was crossing a deep and rocky pass on the Assagai River, near a dense bush called the Buffalo Kloof, when he perceived a Kaffir armed with a gun moving in a crouching posture a short distance before him.

Being on a restive horse, Mr. PENNY, though lame, dismounted for the purpose of having greater command of his gun, but before reaching the ground received the fire of the savage, and whose aim was so well meant, that the ball passed through the brim of his hat.  Mr. P. fired in return, but at that moment he saw two other Kaffirs running to cut off his retreat from the pass into which he had entered.  Not a moment was to be lost; springing therefore into his saddle, he dashed forward, and succeeded in making good his retreat from the lurking enemy.

Wednesday – Information came in to day that during the previous night a large number of cattle had been swept off from the Institution of Farmersfield.  The adroit plunderers had succeeded in emptying three kraals and in making off with the whole of the cattle which they had contained.  Unfortunately, the village was but weak, arising from a number of its most useful hands having been called to do active service in the field, and others of them being absent at the Kowie with wagons for supplies. Pursuit was, however, immediately made by a small party on the track of the marauders…. Reported that the spoors of several Kaffirs had been seen near Vaal Krans, 18 N.W. of Graham’s Town, and apprehensions are entertained of robberies in that quarter.

Thursday – Received information of the loss of the little coaster “Albatross”, the property of Messrs. CAWOOD, in attempting, for the first time, to enter the mount of the river.  It seems that she reached that point on Tuesday, and succeeded in crossing the bar in safety.  In nearing the bluff, however, at the entrance of the narrows, from some error of steerage she got on the sand on the western shore.  Assistance being promptly given, a rope was made fast to her from the opposite bank, and it was expected that the next day she would have been secured from danger.  Unfortunately, it came on to blow a hurricane, and in spite of every effort she was driven on the rocks on the Eastern side of the river, where we understand she is a complete wreck.  We believe a great part of the cargo has been or will be saved.  No lives have been lost.

The regret felt at this misfortune is heightened from the fact that it was an experimental trip, and that it must damp the ardor of those who are anxious to make the Fish River available for maritime purposes.  However, one fact has been proved, namely that the impediment to the navigation of the River does not consist in the bar, and which in this instance was crossed without difficulty.  The great desideratum at all such places as the Knysna, Kowie, and Fish River, appears to be a steam-tug.  With this all these places would be easy and safe, without such aid they must ever be difficult and dangerous.  The “Albatross” was an old vessel, her burthen about 20 tons.  She was laden chiefly with Flour and salt.

Friday – Received a copy of the following official report:-

Farmersfield, November, 1846.

With great pleasure I write to inform you that we have overtaken the Kaffirs who took our cattle from Farmersfield, and recovered all the cattle except one which the thieves had slaughtered, and was preparing to cook it.  The thieves were under Blue Krantz, on the Braak River, in a very deep kloof near the River, where men may fear to enter.

We there fell in with three Kaffirs.  One was coming out of the bush just as we entered, we fired and shot him through the forehead, leaving him dead.  Some of our party whom we had posted below in the kloof shot the other two, one through the lungs, leaving him dead also.  The third was shot through the back, who fell, leaving all his things which he was carrying and cried out for mercy; he however did not wait, but immediately threw himself down some rocks into the river, it was late in the day.  No persons were left to protect the place, so we did not search for him.  We are certain he will never see his country again.

After driving away our cattle the thieves selected 39 of the best, - 38 of which we have recovered.

We have taken the following articles from these thieves:- 2 guns, with powder horns and 2 pouches, with many balls, 6 assagais, 3 riems, 2 pecks or hoes, 3 knap-sacks, 3 tinder boxes, pipers, knives, &c., 3 karosses, 1 whip.

Information has been received from Kaffirland, to the effect that Col. SOMERSET, within the last few days, has made a most successful movement upon Pato’s position, near the source of the Buffalo, capturing 2,000 head of fine cattle.  Two men of the C.M. Rifles are said to have been killed in this affair, - but the loss on the part of the Kaffirs is not mentioned, nor do we infer it can have been great, as the enemy, on finding whom he had to deal with, fell back at once, leaving the above-mentioned number of cattle in the hands of the British force.  It is stated that Colonel SOMERSET in making a reconnoisance previous to his attack, narrowly escaped being intercepted by the enemy. We have also an account purporting that an attempt was made on Monday last, the 23rd instant, by the Kaffirs to intercept a convoy of mule wagons on their way with supplies from Fort Peddie to Colonel SOMERSET’s camp on the Gualana.  It seems that the escort, consisting of 18 men, were inside these wagons, and, consequently, not been seen by the Kaffirs, the latter probably considered they were without guard.  Be this as it may, the Kaffirs presented themselves in such force that it was not thought prudent to proceed; - wheeling round, therefore, the convoy succeeded in getting back at a sharp pace to Fort Peddie without injury.

Saturday – Received further particulars from the N.E. Boundary, and from which it appears that the poor men who were killed while bringing dispatches for His Excellency were shot by a party of Boers at the Kei Drift.  They were sitting on the ground at the time when attacked, and were mistaken, it must be supposed, for Kaffirs; but still the attack appears to have been so thoughtlessly made, that the government is called upon by every principle of justice and humanity to cause a rigid inquiry into the whole of the circumstances attending the case.  One man escaped by concealing himself in the water among reeds, with only his mouth and nostrils exposed for air.  He remained in this perilous and painful situation from noon until sun-set, and then succeeded in affecting his escape with part of the dispatches, which he picked up on the spot, where they were at the moment of attack.

FRONTIER

(Frontier Times)

Monday – A shocking murder was wantonly and publicly committed in High-street, Graham’s Town, yesterday evening, The murderer is a young Hottentot in the employ of Mr. OGILVIE. The man, it seems, was standing in the street with his gun loaded, and was speaking to two Hottentot girls, who were in charge of two little children belonging to Mr. E. PHILIPPS, to one of whom he made a proposal, which on her declining to accept, he levelled his gun and threatened to shoot her. The children on seeing him raise his gun, immediately ran off, the elder one, a boy of about four years of age, leading the younger. The man fired, and the ball passing through the shoulder of one of the girls, who was killed on the spot, struck the other, who, after lingering a short time, also expired. The man is in custody.
